The Ultimate 7-Day BVI Sailing Itinerary

A Captain-Recommended Route Through the British Virgin Islands

A week sailing through the British Virgin Islands (BVI) is widely considered the classic Caribbean charter experience. The islands are close together, the waters are calm and protected, and every anchorage offers something memorable—from world-famous beach bars to hidden snorkeling coves and powder-white beaches.

At Sail Makin’ Memories, we spend much of the season guiding guests through the BVI. Over time, we’ve refined a route that combines iconic destinations with quieter anchorages, giving guests the best balance of adventure, relaxation, and island culture.

This 7-day BVI sailing itinerary begins and ends in Tortola and highlights many of the destinations that make the British Virgin Islands one of the top sailing destinations in the world.

Turquoise bay with anchored boats and lush green hills. Sandy beach with a few people walking. Vibrant, serene tropical setting.

Day 1 — Tortola to Norman Island

Your BVI adventure begins with a short sail from Tortola to Norman Island, a legendary destination often associated with pirate lore and said to have inspired Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island.

Spend the afternoon snorkeling at two of the most impressive underwater sites in the territory:

  • The Caves: A dramatic series of sea caves where snorkelers can explore underwater tunnels filled with coral, tropical fish, and shimmering light reflections.

  • The Indians: A group of rocky pinnacles rising from the sea, surrounded by vibrant coral reefs and abundant marine life.

After snorkeling, anchor in The Bight, one of the most popular and protected anchorages in the BVI.

Dinner options include a relaxed meal aboard or a visit to The Bight Restaurant, known for its excellent cuisine and laid-back island atmosphere. For something livelier, the legendary floating bar Willy T is just a short dinghy ride away.

Day 2 — Norman Island to Cooper Island

Sail east to Cooper Island, a guest favorite known for its boutique atmosphere, eco-friendly philosophy, and stunning turquoise waters.

Before anchoring, stop to snorkel Cistern Point, one of the best reef sites in the BVI. The coral here attracts turtles, rays, reef fish, and occasionally nurse sharks.

Afterward, settle into Manchioneel Bay, a calm anchorage perfect for swimming, paddleboarding, or relaxing on deck.

In the evening, enjoy dinner at the Cooper Island Beach Club Restaurant, widely considered one of the best dining experiences in the British Virgin Islands. Fresh seafood, craft cocktails, and sunset views create a memorable island evening.

Day 3 — Cooper Island to Virgin Gorda (The Baths)

Today’s destination is one of the Caribbean’s most famous natural attractions: The Baths on Virgin Gorda.

Massive granite boulders form a labyrinth of caves, tidal pools, and hidden beaches. Walking through the winding passages feels like stepping into a natural sculpture garden carved by the sea.

After exploring The Baths, sail to North Sound, a calm and scenic anchorage surrounded by luxury resorts, turquoise water, and sheltered bays.

This area is ideal for paddleboarding, swimming, or simply relaxing as the sun sets behind Virgin Gorda’s dramatic hills.

Day 4 — North Sound to Anegada

Today brings the longest sail of the itinerary and a completely different island experience.

Anegada is unique among the Virgin Islands. Unlike the volcanic islands surrounding it, Anegada is a low-lying coral island known for its endless white-sand beaches and expansive reef system.

Once ashore, many visitors rent scooters, jeeps, or bikes to explore the island.

Popular stops include:

  • Loblolly Bay – famous for its clear water and coral reef snorkeling

  • Cow Wreck Beach – a relaxed beach bar with incredible views

  • Flamingo ponds in the island’s quiet interior

Anegada is also famous for its Caribbean lobster dinners, which are a must-try experience when in season.

Day 5 — Anegada to Cane Garden Bay

Sail back toward Tortola and anchor at Cane Garden Bay, one of the most picturesque beaches in the British Virgin Islands.

The crescent-shaped bay is lined with palm trees, beach bars, and colorful restaurants.

Spend the afternoon swimming or relaxing on the beach before the evening comes alive with live music, rum cocktails, and classic Caribbean hospitality.

Guests can enjoy a lively beach-bar dinner or return to the boat for a peaceful evening under the stars.

Day 6 — Cane Garden Bay to Jost Van Dyke

No BVI sailing itinerary is complete without a stop at Jost Van Dyke, one of the most beloved islands in the territory.

Start the day at White Bay, home to the legendary Soggy Dollar Bar, where the famous Painkiller cocktail was first created.

The shallow turquoise water makes it easy to swim ashore and enjoy the vibrant beach atmosphere.

Later, move to Great Harbour for the night and visit Foxy’s, a BVI institution known for its music, dancing, and unforgettable island hospitality.

Day 7 — Jost Van Dyke to Sandy Spit to Tortola

Before returning to Tortola, stop at Sandy Spit, a tiny circular island that looks like something from a postcard.

With just a handful of palm trees and crystal-clear water surrounding it, Sandy Spit is the perfect place for a final swim, snorkel, or beach photo.

Afterward, sail back to Tortola, completing an unforgettable week exploring the British Virgin Islands by sea.
